Professional info

I'm a 21 year-old current University student at James Cook, Townsville, Australia. I spent the last year (2014) in Würzburg, a small city in Germany, where I picked up a bit of the language, continuing on from my previous studies of that language during my first years of high school. Besides university, I currently tutor school children, from Prep to Grade 12, in Maths, English, Geography, and other Sciences. My latest foray into the designing field was a two week internship with Australian Geographic, which I thoroughly enjoyed. I have high hopes for the future, hoping to work within various fields, such as archaeological and palaeontology illustration, graphic designing, working within the film industry (with work either on set, or pre-production as a story artist), and with galleries and museums.

Work experience

Australian Geographic Design Intern.

June/July 2015

I worked as a design intern with Australian Geographic (the first they've ever had!) for two weeks within my university break. I worked on many aspects at the magazine, which included designs for their website ads, helped develop the layout of a future educational book project, and redesigned the t-shirt used for the explorers they support.

Hervey Range Hotel Archaeological Site Volunteer Illustrator.

June 2013

I volunteered with some local archaeological students to attend a dig finding the location of Queensland's oldest hotel. My role was to illustrate some of the more interesting finds, but I also lent a hand with digging holes.

Julia Creek Marathon and Rodeo Festival. Game Stalls and Face Painting.

June 2013

For a couple of weeks in the year, the small town of Julia Creek in the Outback of Australia holds a locally famous festival. During the day there are various marathons, and during the evening and night there are rodeaos and concerts. Usually not aimed towards children, the coordinator decided to change that and have small stalls of games and face painting near the events. My role there switched between managing the stalls or painting the faces of kids.

Tropical Arts Cairns Theatre. Runner Intern.

June/July 2012

During my holiday break, I went home to Cairns and helped out at a local theatre company. Known particularly for the Shakespearean work, it was through acting with them during high school that I knew I could learn other theatre aspects with them. As a runner intern, I helped with the directorial aspects of the theatre world, such as website creations, fundraisers, costume making, invitation creations, VIP listings, and script readings.

Education

James Cook University. Bachelor of New Media Arts. (Australia)

2011 - 2015

My current university; I'm in my fourth and final year of study at JCU, where I study New Media Arts: with a major in illustration and minor in Graphic Designing.

Hochschule für angewandte Wissenschaften Würzburg-Schweinfurt. Communication Designs Year Exchange. (Germany)

2014 - 2015

For my third year of university, I actually went and studied at the Bavarian school 'FHWS' in their communication design division. Unfortunately, I was told that the year would be taught in English, only to find out when I arrived that the areas that was all English was actually business. The communication design section was taught only in German, and many staff and students only spoke broken English. From my constant exposure to the language, one of the most valuable things I learnt while overseas was communicating with a language barrier, and then overcoming that to understand the world around me.

Cairns State High School. International Baccaleaurate. (Australia)

2010 - 2011

I was in the class that was the first to go through with International Baccaleaurate at Cairns State High School. Studying International Baccalaeurate means that you must learn a language (I learnt Italian, and I discovered whilst travelling overseas that my Italian and German are probably at the same stage of understanding), as well as study a science and mathematical subject through to university level, with the subjects English, and Geography. However, we had to also study philosophy, write a thesis, and complete 150 hours of community work.
