The constellation, in Babylonian times, is the depiciton of the god Nergal, the God of War and the Sun During Noontime and The Summer Solstice. He evolved from a War God to God of the Underworld when given to him by Enlil and Ninlil (The Mother and Father Gods). Iconography pictured Nergal as a lion, wheras stone monuments have him as a mace, mounted by a lion's head. He was also sometimes depicted with wings, two heads (one human head, and one panther head), with a scorpion stinger above the horse tail. As well as being a centaur-like creature firing an arrow, he is associated with the planet Mars.
