The Myth of Virgo

The current constellation we know of Virgo is actually made up of two Babylonian constellations: The Frond and The Furrow.

The Frond, the current western part of the constellation, represented the figure of the goddess Erua, holding her sacred branch of Date-palm (The constellation rises in the autumn months as dates ripen.)

The Furrow, the current eastern part of the constellation, depicts Ishtar holding an ear of barley. Again, this is because ithe constellation rises during the autumn months, just as the fields are ready to be sown with the barley seeds for the coming season.
